About

Brampton Caledon Health Coalition is a grassroots coalition of residents of Brampton and Caledon with a foundational focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion.

We hope to create a groundswell of support for stopping privatization of public healthcare, getting new public hospitals in Brampton with emergency rooms and overnight beds, and OHIP for all, regardless of immigration status.

We organize as a chapter of Ontario Health Coalition to protect and improve public healthcare in Brampton, Caledon, and Ontario at large.

In May, as Peel Region Health Coalition, we helped the Ontario Health Coalition (our mother organization) hold a Public Hospital Vote residents’ referendum, where 98% of 400,000 people across Ontario voted no to private hospitals and clinics. There were 15,000 votes in Peel alone!

Public Hospital Vote

Over the summer we voted to divide the Peel Region Health Coalition into two coalitions, Brampton Caledon Health Coalition and Mississauga Health Coalition to make our organizing more locally focused.

In August 2023 we had a Barbecue at White Spruce Park to eat, socialize, talk about the issues, make signs, and vote to keep Brampton and Caledon together, and to confirm Janine Herrmann-McLeod as co-chair.

On September 13, 2023 we held a Phone Zap for Truly Universal Healthcare with Healthcare for All Coalition and SURJto, to send emails and phone messages to our representatives for our main three demands.

On September 25, we gathered with 8-10 thousand other Ontarians to protest the opening day of the Queen’s Park legislature at Ontario Health Coalition’s Public Hospital Protest where parliament could hear the crowd chanting during question period. We had a bus of 20 come from Bramalea City Centre, and it was amazing to be part of something so huge to fight privatization.

On Nov. 21, 2023, we held a Healthcare and Health Equity Town Hall with Unifor and Peel Regional Labour Council, where we asked residents to tell us their stories about healthcare in Brampton and Caledon, and how it affected them. Our panel of experts responded to those personal stories and connected them back to the systemic issues, and our Community Partners provided literature, fun freebies, conversation, and education before and after the meeting.

We are active on social media, where we are now striving to build a presence and tell people’s healthcare stories, as well as educate people on the facts.

We are passionate about Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, intersectionality, as well as collaboration with other community organizations. We value creativity, compassion, accessibility, teamwork, community-building, and evidence-based, heartfelt organizing.

Our Plans for the Future

On April 22, 2024, we will be having our protest outside Brampton Civic Hospital on April 22 from 3-7pm on the northeast corner of Bramalea Rd. and Bovaird Dr. E.

We will be holding signs, shouting chants, singing songs, showing visual representations of ratios of hospital care, having a few speakers, taking videos for social media telling healthcare experiences and stories, and asking people to Honk for Better Healthcare!

On May 30th, we are organizing a bus to Toronto for a March with Ontario Health Coalition from Nathan Philip’s Square to Queen’s Park. We would love if you would join us or donate so we can create a big presence from Brampton and Caledon!

We will also be working on expanding our research and network by collaborating with other community organizations to write articles for our blog, and for the other organization to release simultaneously to their membership. We also want to do presentations in the community on various healthcare topics, and welcome any speakers who would like to speak to our membership on relevant topics.

Collaboration and Solidarity are what we do!
